ATLANTIC CITY – The New York Avenue School Parents Advisory Council recently hosted an inspiring and fun-filled meeting that successfully encouraged positive attendance habits. More than 100 attendees gathered for an attendance challenge aimed at kickstarting the second half of the school year with enthusiasm and commitment. The event also marked the start of a 12-day Knowlej competition, a newly introduced initiative to bolster student attendance.
Knowlej, a California-based educational program launched in 2023, was designed to motivate students to attend school daily and be punctual. To create a strong partnership between families and the school, attendees were entered into a drawing for exciting prizes, including an iPad and several gift cards. Laurie Egrie, Social Emotional Learning Coach at New York Avenue School, played a pivotal role in bringing the program to the school, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between parents and children to cultivate positive attendance habits.
Egrie noted that the school tends to see a dip in attendance during January, as some students extend their winter breaks while others struggle to adjust back to the school routine. By pairing the meeting with a friendly competition and prizes, the event not only highlighted the importance of showing up but also made the process enjoyable and engaging for everyone involved. Parents participated in "Minute to Win It" challenges, competing in exciting games as their children cheered them on, creating a sense of community and teamwork.
The day reinforced the school’s rallying cry for consistent attendance: "Show up. Level Up." With this encouraging message, both students and parents were motivated to keep building momentum toward success and ensure the second half of the school year would be marked by strong attendance and achievement.
