Honoring Atlantic City Police Officer Thomas McMeekin Jr.: 20 Years of Remembrance

Every March 4, the Atlantic City community gathers at the intersection of Chelsea and Atlantic avenues to pay tribute to Officer Thomas McMeekin Jr., a dedicated member of the Atlantic City Police Department whose legacy continues to be honored two decades after his passing.

Officer McMeekin, a five-year veteran of the force, tragically lost his life at just 28 years old after being struck while directing traffic at an accident scene on March 3, 2005. The following day, his passing left a lasting impact on his family, colleagues, and the city he served.

To commemorate his sacrifice, friends, family, and fellow officers come together each year at the very spot where he was struck—now named in his honor. Following the ceremony, the group gathers at the Irish Pub, a long-standing tradition that allows those who knew him to share memories and celebrate the life he lived.

Officer McMeekin came from a family deeply rooted in public service, with both his father and brother serving as Atlantic City firefighters. His dedication to protecting and serving the community remains an inspiration, and his memory continues to be a guiding light for those who wear the badge.

As the city marks 20 years since his passing, the annual tribute ensures that his legacy lives on—not just in the hearts of those who knew him, but in the spirit of service that defines Atlantic City’s law enforcement community.
