The Atlantic City Public Schools embraced the joy of reading as they participated in Read Across America. Superintendent Dr. La’Quetta S. Small visited Texas Avenue School on March 6, 2025, where she shared her love for literature with students. Sitting before Rohima Begun’s second-grade class, Dr. Small read the book “I Am Enough” by Grace Byers, encouraging students to embrace their individuality and self-worth.
As Dr. Small read, students listened attentively and reflected on the story’s message. Aryan Camarillo, a second-grade student, took the lesson to heart, sharing, “If it doesn’t work the first time, try a second time.” The event reinforced the power of perseverance and self-confidence through literature.
Throughout the district, schools hosted various literacy-focused activities, including read-a-thons, spelling bees, and visits from community members. Texas Avenue School Principal Lina Gil emphasized the importance of promoting literacy in a fun and engaging way, while guest readers such as Board of Education President Shay Steele, Geoffrey Dorsey, and Dr. Small read to students at New York Avenue School and Brighton Avenue School.
At Sovereign Avenue School, Media Specialist Kimberly Shick organized a celebration featuring readings by Charles and Randi Barbin of the Dunes Art Gallery, who highlighted the importance of physical books in today’s digital world. Former NFL player Keith Hunter visited Chelsea Heights School, reminding students of the value of active listening in both academics and life.
Read Across America is more than a one-day event—it is a movement designed to foster a lifelong love of reading. By participating in this initiative, Atlantic City Public Schools reaffirmed their commitment to literacy and student success, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to explore the world through books.
