On Sunday, February 2, 2025, Atlantic City High School’s Vikings triumphed over the Pleasantville High School Greyhounds 63–43 in the highly anticipated Battle By the Bay basketball invitational. The victory marked not only an exciting win for the team but also a monumental milestone for the tournament, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year.
The Battle By the Bay event, first held in the mid-1990s, was created to prepare local basketball teams for postseason play in front of large crowds, while also raising money for student scholarships. The tournament quickly grew into a cherished tradition, attracting some of the best programs in the region. Over the years, the event has fostered a fierce rivalry between Atlantic City and Pleasantville, with each match-up drawing massive attention. As organizer Wilbur Banks noted, “You throw records out the window in that game. The bragging rights are just as important as the trophies.”
Originally conceived in 1995 by former Athletic Director Donald Marsh, the tournament aimed to help Atlantic City High get ready for postseason play. What started as a local competition has evolved into a national draw, with teams from New York, Pennsylvania, and beyond traveling to compete. This year marked the first time Marsh returned to see the growth of the tournament, and he was honored at the game.
Battle By the Bay has also included additional elements, like the exciting cheerleading competition, which became a highlight of the event. The cheerleaders, under the guidance of creative director Barnes, delivered a performance that had everyone on their feet. The 30th-anniversary celebration not only showcased athletic excellence but also demonstrated the power of community spirit and collaboration.
