Atlantic City Commemorates 100 Years of Soldiers Home with Yearlong Celebration

By:

The All Wars Memorial Building, known as Soldiers Home, has stood as a pillar of strength, resilience, and community for a century. Originally dedicated in August 1925, this historic landmark was created to serve veterans of color during a time of segregation, offering a place for unity, advocacy, and cultural enrichment. As part of Atlantic City’s resilient Black history, Soldiers Home remains a vital institution, symbolizing the contributions of Black veterans and their role in shaping the city’s civic and social landscape.

To mark its 100th anniversary, the City of Atlantic City launched a yearlong celebration, led by Atlantic City Council Vice President Kaleem Shabazz and supported by Mayor Marty Small, Sr. The milestone kicked off with a banner unveiling ceremony at Soldiers Home, followed by a community-wide 100th birthday celebration featuring music, food, and a Black History Month Expo—honoring the deep historical ties between Soldiers Home and Atlantic City’s Black community.

Honoring a Legacy of Service and Sacrifice

Beyond its role as a veterans' hall, Soldiers Home has been a cultural and civic hub for generations of Atlantic City residents. It has hosted countless community events, memorial services, and gatherings that highlight the perseverance and impact of Black veterans.

Upcoming events in 2025 will continue to honor this legacy, including a Memorial Day service and a special event highlighting veterans’ contributions to civic and community life in Atlantic City. As part of this commemoration, veterans and their families are encouraged to share photos, memories, and personal stories about their connection to Soldiers Home. Submissions can be sent to soldiershome100@gmail.com to be included in the anniversary recognition.

For more information about the 100th anniversary festivities, contact Councilman Kaleem Shabazz at kshabazz@acnj.gov or 609-957-0441.

As Atlantic City continues to celebrate its rich Black history, the centennial of Soldiers Home serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices, resilience, and leadership of Black veterans—ensuring their legacy is honored for generations to come.
