The City Hall Courtyard in Atlantic City is undergoing a transformative renovation, renamed Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver Plaza in honor of the late New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver. This revitalized space celebrates Oliver’s legacy and her dedication to Atlantic City while incorporating environmentally responsible design and community-focused improvements.
The project, a collaboration between the City of Atlantic City, Atlantic County, and the State of New Jersey, features a range of enhancements. The plaza will include renewable energy concepts, improved security with enhanced lighting and gated walkways, and aesthetic upgrades like fixed benches, a rain garden, a marble fountain, and a pergola. The redesign also addresses convenience with a newly planned main parking lot and north parking lot.
Sheila Oliver’s name is etched above the main entrance to City Hall and displayed on street signs throughout the courtyard, ensuring her enduring presence in the city she supported so passionately.
“This project embodies the spirit of Sheila Oliver,” said Mayor Marty Small, Sr. “She always talked about retiring in Atlantic City, and now she will be forever honored here in this great city. Employees and guests will enjoy this beautiful space for years to come.”
Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver Plaza is a tribute to a trailblazer whose work continues to inspire, reflecting Atlantic City’s commitment to progress, sustainability, and honoring its community leaders.
